Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains in Australia is not only a World Heritage Area but also has magnificent scenery to be enjoyed just an hour's drive or train ride from Sydney. The name "blue" comes from the bluish haze that evaporates from the millions of eucalyptus trees in the mountains. The range is as long as the Rockies but isn't nearly as high. Mount Kosciusko, Australia's highest mountain, is only 2229 metres high.

Birds and wildlife abound in the Blue Mountains as well as many towns and villages with galleries featuring the work of local artists as well as other historic buildings, antique and collectibles shops, museums, art and craft shops, old churches, beautiful gardens, coffee houses, and eateries. You must try the homemade scones with jams and cream and gourmet pies among the many local cuisine favorites. A variety of local wines is another experience to take part in.

There are many types of accommodation available including caravan parks, bed and breakfasts, guest houses, or luxury resorts to fit anyone's budget.

The Blue Mountains National Park attracts over three million visitors a year and has received two major Australian tourism industry awards. Bush walks are very popular to get close to nature to see ancient and rare plants and also animals that live in the deep gorges. There are diverse walking tracks even including ones for disabled people. You can cycle (mountain bike) on the cliff tops and in the valleys along paths that were discovered by Aboriginal hunters thousands of years ago.

There are spring and autumn garden festivals, golf tournaments in the summer, and Yulefest events in the winter.

You can take a ride on the Zig Zag Railway (an engineering masterpiece from the 19th century) from Lithgow in New South Wales. Running daily (except for Christmas Day), this train behind a steam locomotive winds through the remarkable scenery of the Blue Mountains.

The Jenolan Caves has beautifully lit nine huge limestone caves with their stalactites and stalagmites. You must go on a guided tour because stairs and boardwalks traverse difficult sections. A huge stone arch caps the entrance to the caves.

The Laurella Toy and Railway Museum has Australia's largest collection of model railways, toys, teddy bears, and dolls. There is also a Candy Store with nostalgic displays.
